The New Inventors and many other things
Bernie Hobbs has always had a thing for science. And while she’s spent some time actually doing it, her real passion is for talking (and talking, and talking) about science.
A former teacher and medical researcher, Bernie’s been talking, writing and having a beer or two over science at the ABC since 1997. Best known for her role as a judge on ABC TV’s The New Inventors, Bernie also has a bunch of weekly radio shows, award-winning websites (planetslayer.com and http://www.abc.net.au/science/experimentals/) and Café Scientific events to her credit.
In her latest incarnation, Bernie can be seen having way too much fun online and on TV in the ABC’s new science show for kids, the experiMENTALS.
Bernie will present the closing keynote session on Wednesday October 4

TITLE: The Accidental Computer Educator
ABSTRACT: Best known as a judge on the New Inventors, Bernie Hobbs is an award-winning writer, presenter and producer of irreverent science websites at the ABC. Learning to love computers was no small feat for this woman who once lost her thesis by accidentally stuffing the floppy into the gap between disk drives on her PC. The floppy was rescued, and 15 years later her reputation in new media is remarkably intact. Join Bernie for a hilarious tour of her journey from science teacher to full-time webhead.
